Barcelona Street Art…

It’s full of cafes, bars, restaurants and shops, although it was a bit on the chilly side for sitting al-fresco, and some of the bars / restaurants became more ‘touristy’ (pictures of meals on boards so less language-adventurous customers can point at what they want)…
La Vinya del Senyor, Barcelona

With over 300 wines to choose from, including a selection that changes every fortnight that’s available by the glass if you don’t want a bottle, the view of the amazing Santa Maria Del Mar is the icing on the cake – or rather the foam on the top of a perfect glass of cava…

Then it’s just two 4-day working weeks, with a nice 4-day weekend in between them, and it’s Barcelona here we come!
Not that we’re looking forwards to it of course, or that I’ve started my packing list already…Or that I’m doing my usual panic-stricken brushing-up on my incredibly rusty Castellano…
Tibidabo Aeroplane – Barcelona
Posted: March 1, 2012 | Author: Jacquie Finister | Filed under: Barcelona Posts, Photography, Travel | Tags: Barcelona, Catalonia, Serra de Collserola, Spain, Tibidabo, Tibidabo Amusement Park | 2 Comments »Mike took this photo a couple of years ago on a visit to Tibidabo Amusement Park in Barcelona, using the ‘Colour Select’ feature on his Canon camera. It’s one of my favourite photographs.
It’s a replica of the airplane that made the first flight between Barcelona and Madrid, was inaugurated in 1928, and is one of the few original rides left in the park.
I couldn’t pluck up the courage to go on a ’round trip’… Part of its circuit is out over the edge of Tibidabo mountain (at 512 meters it’s the tallest mountain in the Serra de Collserola) and trust me it was a LONG way down… Made me have a bit of a funny turn just looking over the edge! Yes I know its probably very securely attached – in fact it’s been securely attached since its inaguration in 1928 (actually that doesn’t make me feel any better about it…), but no way no how was I climbing in and trusting that my added weight might not be that pound too far…!
Children continue to love it though which is all that matters!

We didn’t manage to get there last year, so we both feel a strong need to ‘reconnect’.
Barcelona is a true ‘city of contrasts’.

It’s a city heavily steeped in Roman history and culture. In the ‘Barri Gotic’ (Gothic Quarter) you can still see Roman ruins above ground, there’s the remains of an aqueduct as well as parts of the city walls including a city gate, both of which are near the Cathedral. Even more stunning are those ruinsstill at their at their original level, expertly excavated and amazingly preserved within the Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat (‘City History Museum’) - the most extensive subterranean Roman ruins in the World. You can almost feel them beneath your feet as you wander the maze of winding, shadowed streets so typical of the Gothic Quarter that surround the Cathedral. Catalonia, of which Barcelona is the capital, has the seat of their government – the ‘Generalitat’ – on the site of the original Roman forum, and the Cathedral is built on the site of Roman temple (as well as a Moorish mosque).
The ‘Old Town’ complete with La Rambla, or rather ‘Las Ramblas‘ – there are five of them in total end to end – is Read the rest of this entry »
