Barcelona…(two weeks and counting…)

Easter fortnight starts this coming Monday.  Then it’s just two 4-day working weeks, with a nice 4-day weekend in between them, and it’s Barcelona here we come!

Not that we’re looking forwards to it of course, or that I’ve started my packing list already…Or that I’m doing my usual panic-stricken brushing-up on my incredibly rusty Castellano

We haven’t visited for a couple of years, so we’ve got quite a few favourite places and old haunts we want to refamiliarise ourselves with…

Like the family-run El Xampanyet, a wonderful family-run establishment on Carrer Montcada (not far from the Picasso Museum) run by the Estevet family.  Their ‘house bubbly’ (Xampanyet) is absolutely wonderful and as for their anchovies…well, let’s just say they’re already making Mike’s mouth water in anticipation!

Or La Vinya del Senyor with their amazing range of wines, situated in the square opposite the beautiful ‘Cathedral of the Sea’ – Santa Maria Del Mar – and the first place we tried cecina.   Neither of us are religious in the ‘traditional’ sense, but we love wandering around this cathedral, feeling its calmness and serenity – the very presence of the people who’ve spent time here over hundreds of years steeped into every stone.

Or how about the amazing multi-coloured tile-roofed Mercat de Santa Caterina  – who needs the over-photographed, full-of-tourists Mercat de Boqueria!  This one’s the real deal – a true ‘everyday’ market for Barcelonans, full of wonderful produce and great little cafe bars (we love Bar Joan) – perfect! 🙂  We love to buy our ingredients here and the merchants are incredibly patient as we ask for whatever we’re after with our basic Spanish – even though we use Castellano and not Catalan

And the magical, winding, history-soaked, atmospheric streets of El Born and the Gothic Quarter – our favourite barrios in the city…

There’s obviously many, many more places we want to return to, but that’s for other posts  🙂
Right then…back to brushing up on my Spanish!

It sounds like it will be a wonderful trip! How fortunate you are to be able to visit. My daughter was there a couple of years ago. Have fun!
